Community Information
Salem population: 42,000 Salem is the county seat of Essex County Land area: 8.10 sq. mi. Water area: 9.95 sq. mi. Shoreline: 18.5 miles
Salem owns 10 islands in Salem Sound including Baker's Island, Great Misery Island and Little Misery Island. The other seven include one on the Atlantic side of Marble- head and one off the coast of Swampscott.
Hospitals: North Shore Medical Center con- sisting of the Salem Hospital, the Salem Childrens Hospital, and the Shaughnessy- Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital.
Salem State University has over 10,000 students
Downtown Salem has: 66 restaurants 15 attractions 11 Antiques shops 27 gift and souvenir shops 14 food and beverage shops 14 clothing and accessories stores 10 book, hobby, and sporting stores 18 witch shops
Recreation: 2 golf courses: Olde Salem Greens (public) Kernwood Country Club (private) 31 parks, including the Salem Common, Winter Island, McCabe Marina and Recre- ation Area, Salem Willows Park, Forest River Park and pool, Salem Woods, Collins Cove Park, Gallows Hill Park, Mack Park, as well as the operation of the Witch House and the Haunted City program.
With Salem's parks the city manages 22 basketball courts, 20 playgrounds, 15 baseball diamonds, 12 tennis courts, 5 staffed beaches, 2 street-hockey courts and 1 skate park.
