  Pioneer Village
This recreation of the Salem of 1630 was built in 1930 to coincide with the tricentennial of John Winthrop’s landing of his fleet in Salem. It is the oldest living history museum in the country.

In recent years it has had difficulty maintaining the buildings and grounds, but a new group of concerned citizens has been working feverishly to bring the 17th Century village back so that people can once again learn about how people lived nearly 400 years ago. The homes and other buildings are authentic in their construction right down to the thatched roofs, which were done by master thatcher, William Cahill of Ireland in July and August of 2006.

The Village was open to the public on a few Sundays in the fall of 2006. It was also open on Saturday August 4, in 2007. A theater troupe from Gordon College in period costume depicted life in 1630 while interacting with visitors. It will be open one or two other days during 2007. Hopefully in the near future it will come alive on a seasonal basis.
