          Elizabeth Palmer Peabody  1804-1894

          See photo 22:

Elizabeth Peabody was a teacher and writer. She'd been encouraged by her parents that a woman had a right and an obligation to achieve.

Thus she became accomplished in a wide variety of subjects including history, literature, Latin and Greek. She took Greek lessons from

Ralph Waldo Emerson. Peabody became a fine horsewoman and a crack shot. Long before most other educators she believed that the play of

children has inherent educational value. In 1860 she opened the first kindergarten in the United States on Pinckney Street in Boston.

Her sister Sophia married author Nathaniel Hawthorne.
