         See photo 19:

Rebecca Nurse was born in Yarmouth, England. At the Salem Witch Trials Nurse was accused by Ann Putnam of being a witch.

Her story has been made famous by fictionalized accounts such as Arthur Miller's play The Crucible. The mother of eight was 71

when she was brought before the court. Thirty-nine members of the community signed petition in her defense. The initial verdict of

the court was Not Guilty, but such an uproar arose from the courtroom that the judges reconsidered the decision and this time the jury

found her guilty. She was hanged on Gallows Hill in Salem.
