        John Endecott   1588-1665

        See photo 18:

John Endecott was born  in Devon, England. In 1628 he and a group of English investors secured a charter from King Charles I granting him and

his group the rights to all the land in New England between a point just south of the Charles River and just north of the Merrimack River.

The charter called this venture the Massachusetts Bay Company, and the land was known as the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Endecott was to be

governor and led the expedition, though ultimate control rested in England. Endecott and 60 people landed at Naumkeag, which later became Salem

and took control from Roger Conant, Salem's founder. Two years later, John Winthrop arrived in Salem with 1,000 people and the authority to replace

Endecott as governor.     Click on John Endecott for more information.
