       Caroline Emmerton   1866-1942

Caroline Emmerton was the granddaughter of wealthy Salem philanthropist John Bertram. Caroline continued the family's tradition of public

service. In 1907, Emmerton opened a settlement house to provide services for the growing number of immigrants. She later purchased the

John Turner House in order to turn it into a museum, The House of the Seven Gables. This was the house made famous by Salem author

Nathaniel Hawthorne. Thus she combined tourism with social service, for the proceeds from the museum helped defray the costs of the

settlement house. The settlement house offered a baby clinic, a kindergarten, English-language courses, sewing, and cooking.
